斯佳丽听见楼梯吱呀作响,便蹑手蹑脚地站起身来。待会儿黑妈妈再过来,会接着数落她不懂礼,所以斯佳丽觉得受不了,自己的心都碎了,哪还听得进去这种鸡毛蒜皮的事。她迟疑地站了一会儿,琢磨着该到哪儿去躲一躲,好让胸口的痛苦缓解一下,脑子里忽地闪出一个念头,又带来了一线希望。这天下午,她父亲骑马到十二橡树庄园韦尔克斯家去了,想去把他的管家波克的妻子迪尔西买过来。迪尔西是十二橡树庄园的女仆总管,也是那里的接生婆。波克和她在半年前结了婚,打那以后,波克日夜不停地恳求主人把迪尔西买过来,好让两口子在同一个庄园一块儿过日子。那天下午,杰拉尔德觉得再也拖不下去了,便出门打算把迪尔西买过来。

斯佳丽心里琢磨着,觉得爸爸肯定会了解到这消息是真是假。今天下午哪怕他并没有真的听到什么,说不定也会注意到点儿什么,觉察到韦尔克斯家有一种喜庆气氛什么的。只要晚饭前我能单独去见爸爸,就会弄个水落石出——只不过是那两个兄弟又一次搞的恶作剧罢了。

这时候杰拉尔德也该回来了,要想单独见他,斯佳丽只能是去车道和大路相连的地方等候。于是她蹑手蹑脚地下了前门台阶,小心翼翼地回头张望了一下,看看黑妈妈是不是在楼上的窗口监视她。飘动的窗帘缝里,并没有出现那张裹着雪白头巾的大黑脸盘用责备的目光盯着她。她便壮着胆子提起绿花边裙子下摆,沿着小径朝车道跑去,可惜脚上穿着一双缎带花边小拖鞋,但还是能跑多快就跑多快。

卵石铺面的车道两边,黑压压的雪松枝条长得连在一块儿,形成一个拱顶把车道整个盖住了,长长的车道像个昏暗的隧道。跑到长满节瘤的雪松树枝下面时,她知道在这儿没人能从房子里看到她,于是她放慢脚步。她跑得气喘吁吁,因为胸衣束得太紧,跑不了多久,但她还是尽量走快。不一会儿便走到了车道尽头,上了大路,但是她并没有停下来,拐了一个弯,拐弯处有一大片浓密的枝叶,彻底隔断了房子朝她所在位置的视线。

她满脸通红,不停地大口喘气,找了个树墩坐下来等父亲。这会儿他早该回来了,不过他回来晚点儿,斯佳丽倒挺高兴的。这一耽搁就给了她时间喘口气,脸上显出平静的表情,免得父亲起疑心。这会儿她时刻期待听到那嘚嘚的马蹄声,看到父亲以他那种一贯迅疾的危险速度,策马飞奔上山坡。然而时间一分一秒地过去,杰拉尔德还是没有出现。斯佳丽禁不住伸长脖子朝大路张望,刚才体验过的那种痛苦又一次涌上心头。
